Data Science

If you are teaching Data Science next year and need some resources, here are a couple to get you going.  Educators have access to a variety of resources to make it easier and less time-consuming to bring data science to the classroom. One impactful resource is the Data Science 4 Everyone (DS4E) by the University of Chicago.

ASU Crash Course Data Literacy offers a 15-video series for educators and students to learn about data literacy. It helps students to build their skills while promoting more student independence in learning as they work through and learn the basics and continue all the way to advanced concepts and interpreting data.

This is the last day of the school year here in Ontario so I will post again in August.  I might post from time to time but not full time until August.  Enjoy your summer.

Could Data Science Diversify the STEM Field?

According to Stanford professor Jo Boaler, “Something that's really important, particularly for adolescents and high school students, is that they feel a sense of belonging inside STEM”.   Researchers have found that a sense of belonging helps students succeed, in part because feeling like you’re a part of a community of learners is a powerful motivator to do well. “And unfortunately, a lot of students do not feel that they belong inside traditional high school maths classes,” said Boaler.  But there is one subject that students, including those who are math confident, enjoy learning: data science.  To read the article click here,  hopefully after checking out my amazon.ca ads below.

Is Data Science the New Coding?

Nadia Tamez-Robledo believes the math curriculum needs to change to allow for schools to teach data science.  She states, "When was the last time you needed to calculate the height of a flag pole? Or even thought about the word “numerator”? Compare that to the last time you had to use Excel or make a decision based on data."  To read the full article click here.  If you are Canadian and making any amazon.ca purchase please click on my links below first.  Thanks.
