News Literacy lessons on Facebook, Marjorie Taylor Greene and more

If you are teaching anything to do with online literacy and deciding whether something is fact or fake you should definitely read the article in the Washington Post. The article highlights the New Literacy Project and the website Checkology which "helps educators teach middle and high school students how to identify credible information, seek out reliable sources, and know what to trust, what to dismiss and what to debunk."  To see the article click here,   hopefully after checking out my amazon.ca ads below.   If you are Canadian and making any amazon.ca purchase please click on my links below first as I will get a small commission on anything you buy even if it is something else.   Thanks.  This post may contain affiliate links that earns me  a commission at no extra cost to you.  Buy your Christmas gifts soon and check out the pre Black Friday ads below.

Factitious - Fake News or Alternate Facts

I posted about this site back in October 2018 (click here).  They now have a pandemic version of their site.  The website gives a news-story with its source and your job is to decide whether it is real or fake news.  I believe with what is happening south of the border this is very topical.  To see the website click here

Fake News?

If you are teaching about bias and fake news with your students you may want to have them look into this Chrome extension.  According to their site, “your first step in the fight against fake news. Trusted News uses independent, transparent, and neutral sources to assess news sites. We aim to help you cast a more critical eye over the news by rating for fake, questionable or trustworthy news. Using a simple notification system, the extension flags the trustworthiness of the site. Check at-a-glance if a site is reputable or not. Trusted News also highlights satirical and user-generated content.”  To see the site to get the extension, click  here.  To see other posts I have put out on fake news (alternate facts) click here.  You may also want to look at the collection of sites put together by Glen Wiebe on Fake News by clicking here.

This timely article on fake news by Scott Bedley talks about how he has his students look at articles found online.  Even though this was his 5th grade class, the information is pertinent for high school students.  To see the article click here.  I have also previously posted on fake news which can be seen by clicking here.
