Fling the teacher - review quiz generator

I hope you had a good weekend.  As always classtools has some great little "apps" for your classroom.  As a teacher you can easily build a 15 question multiple choice quiz.  If the students get it all correct they get to catapult the "Angry Bird" with your picture on it.  They have 60 seconds to try and launch you into a hole in the ground.  When you go to this app there is a default example.  If you want to build your own and you will, go to the link on the bottom left of the page.  To see the app click here.

Gallery AR

This might be something your art class can do when they are on their virtual session.  This app only works for IOS enabled devices.  From the app store this is what they are saying, "Gallery AR turns your surroundings into the art gallery. You just need to pick up the phone and find a wall. The iconic art paints will show in front of you! You can walk as close as you want, or sit well into the couch in the living room. Don't worry about the dress code. Enjoy famous art collections!  Gallery AR collects the artworks from The Art Institute of Chicago. They released more than 50,000 artworks into the public domain in 2018, and the number will grow regularly. Besides, Gallery AR will also expand the source of art collections to other galleries, museums or institutes."  To see the website click here.

Alternatively it can be a fun, free, way for teachers to present by using it as an animated whiteboard."  To see their website click here.  Watch the video below to see how to use this site.  This will be my last post until the new school year as you should be studying or marking exams.  I will see you after Labour Day.

Photomath

Image result for photomath

From their website, "Photomath is a mobile application described as a "camera calculator", which utilizes a phone's camera to recognize mathematical patterns and to display the solution directly onscreen. It is available for free on Google Android and iOS"

I have utilized this app on my phone and it works well with typed questions and even on my hand written questions.  Not only will it show you a solution but will show you the steps used to get the solution algebraically and graphically.  This works from basic arithmetic through trigonometry and Calculus.  To see the webpage click here.  The downloads can be found for iOS by clicking here  and for Android by clicking here.

Mathchat

Edusurge says "MathChat helps students help each other. Teacher Sam Woodard noticed that when students didn’t understand a math problem, they would text a photo of it to a friend to get help. On MathChat, students can enter or draw a math problem, add friends to it, and collaborate by drawing, typing, and asking each other follow-up questions"

The app is free for the iphone and ipod.  It can be downloaded from the Itunes store by clicking here.

ThingLink

This is a free app that allows you to make pictures interactive.  You place a pinmark on your picture and then you can make that pinmark pop with text,  videos, links etc when someone touches them.   Students have added multimedia labels to cells or geographic features.  Teachers could make their rubrics pop by putting links to examples or video tutorials.  You can see the app by clicking here.'

A Creative Commons slide show by Donna Baumbach entitled "66+ interesting ways to use ThingLink in the Classroom" can be found by clicking here.

ThingLink had their student contest and posted all the entries.  Click here to see all the entries.  You may want to look at some of these for ideas.  For example their was one on frog dissection, click here or famous composers, click here.

Is that a Wayne Gretsky rookie card?

Well no it's not a Gretsky rookie card but your students can make their own trading cards for a series of characters in a novel or from any fictitious source or even from historical figures in history class.  They could even make trading cards for countries in a geography class, a battle in history, an element in science, a disease in science or health class.

The first card maker that gave me the idea is an IPAD App (not to be confused with an IPHONE App as did originally and  therefore I was not able to test it but do have the app downloaded on my computer if someone with an IPAD would like to try it).

You can download this from the App Store or from ITunes by clicking here.  It is FREE too.

The next site to look for trading cards is from
Thanks for the link Ms. Dillworth.  The card maker is fine but you must find just the right picture to fit into the frame or it will be cropped funny.  Here is the card that I made.

You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish

I usually don't blog on the weekend but here is a music app for free  that does not have anything to do with REO Speedwagon's album title "You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish"  (they were a band back in the day).
click here for the link at itunes
Here is the skinny on this free app for both the iphone and ipad from appadvice.com, "Get almost any instrument in tune with this music app.  You're able to select any one of the 39 included instruments by sliding your finger across the bottom of the screen.  Then play a note and watch as a circular tuner lights up.  The app includes 128 kinds of tunings, accuracy up to 0.1 cent, four built-in skins to choose from, and the ability to import your own image to be used as a skin.  Global Tuner is available for free for a limited time."

Whatchamacology App

This app will help science students with their science specific vocabulary.  It is a free app for the Iphone.  I am not sure about other phones, as I have an Iphone.  The terminology for this app  is selected from the grade 9 through 12 Ontario Science Curriculum.  Yes, I said ONTARIO.  The following is from Brendan Polley,

"Students often find themselves overwhelmed with the amount of new words they have to learn when studying science.  Why cant' we learn about dinosaurs and robots without having to memorize a bunch of definitions? Whatchamacology turns studying scientific terms into a fun, interactive game.

If you enjoy games like Password, Taboo or Catch Phrase, you'll love Whatchamacology.  Get your team to guess scientific terms without using words from their typical definitions.  Act out a scene; draw pictures; tell stories; use analogies.  Earn points for each correct guess.  The team with the most points before the timer runs out wins!  You'll find that when you start thinking creatively about scientific terms, they become much easier to remember.  Great for study groups or classroom review sessions.

Hundreds of clues related to:
-Biology
-Chemistry
-Physics
-Earth and Space Science
-Environmental Science

Whatchamacology includes relevant terminology from the 9-12 Ontario Science Curriculum.  Play a game of random terms or select a set of clues based on subject, grade, and pathway.  You can even submit your own terms and clues to share with your classes and the Whatchamacology community."

Here are some screen shots from my phone ( I just learned how to do that )
