Phet for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Math Simulations

I have previously posted about this great site that I know at least one of the teachers at my school uses.  According to their website, "Founded in 2002 by Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman, the PhET Interactive Simulations project at the University of Colorado Boulder creates free interactive math and science simulations. PhET sims are based on extensive education research and engage students through an intuitive, game-like environment where students learn through exploration and discovery."  If you have never tried their site, give it a go by clicking here,  hopefully after checking out my amazon.ca ads below.   If you are Canadian and making any amazon.ca purchase please click on my links below first as I will get a small commission on anything you buy even if it is something else.   Thanks.  This post may contain affiliate links that earns me  a commission at no extra cost to you.  Buy your Christmas gifts soon.

How online simulations help students develop historical empathy

From the article Mary Berkery has "a particular interest in engaging experiences that incorporate social-emotional learning and help students develop historical empathy. The aim is for them to not just understand events, but the perspectives of those who lived through them and made the decisions that shaped the past and the present."  To see the article click here.

Four Ideas to Spark Active Learning in an Online Classroom

This article by Adrianna Davis will give you some ideas to think about for your online class.  I cover Mr J's 4U chemistry class every day so he can get a 70 minute break.  I usually pop in 5 minutes early and he usually goes over 5 or 10 minutes so I get a chance to see his virtual teachings.  He really uses the first item in the article, polling.  I believe it gives him quick feedback. The second item, letter to future students, my wife uses in here Physed class as part of her final summative evaluation.  To see the article click here.

Build an Atom

PhET Home Page

This site has many great simulations you can download or just click on and use.  "Build an Atom" is an interactive information simulation.  You can build and atom out of protons, electrons and neutrons and then see how the element, mass and charge change.  You can play a game to test your skills.  This would be great as you are teaching this topic or as a review.  To see Build an Atom click here.

CK 12 Flexbooks

Flexbooks is a new open source model of textbook creation that will allow schools, teachers, parents and even students create custom textbooks.  Materials include simulations, PLIX (play, learn, interact, Xplore) and practice. They have materials classified by course and then by topic.  Some of these are quite good depending on course.  Take a look by clicking here.
