Pixabay - Images, Videos & Music free to share

If you are teaching your students to cite their work properly and are picky about this then you should be just as conscientious about the images they use.  If they are just googled and right clicked then the pictures are not necessarily for public use.  There are a couple ways around this as I posted here and here.  Another source of free and royalty free images, videos and music can be found by clicking here to go to Pixabay.

As far as citing goes you should do is teach your students where to find images that are not copyright protected.  I know most students just use Google Images and copy and paste but if you pick Google Advanced Images, and go to the bottom left and select  USAGE RIGHTS and pick FREE TO USE OR SHARE then your images will be copyright free and then you can right click and save.  If you have any question please come and ask me in the Learning Commons.

Getty Images now has over 40  million images available for non-commercial use.  The image below shows how the image looks when embedded.  As a track and field coach, I had to search the images for track and field.  I like the fact that the image is  attributed with the the site I got the image from and the author.  Also many of the images are from very current events, so if you are teaching a course that deals with that you might want to start off your class with these images.  Today had images of the aftermath of the Mexican earthquake.  To see the website click here.  Most teachers are worried about plagiarism in their students writing but are not as fussy about the images they use.  They should be.  They should make sure the pictures are creative commons or take a look at another post I made about Photos For Class by clicking here.

Photos for Class

If you have your students insert pictures into their projects, how many of you ask if the pictures are properly attributed to the author?  How about when you have a picture in a presentation, did you just right click and "borrow" it from Google Images without proper citation?  Are they Creative Commons?  If you or your students use Photos for Class then this problem is solved.  The photos are age appropriate, have automatic citation and licensed by Creative Commons for public use.  If you are trying to teach your class not to plagiarize then it also includes photos. To see Photos for Class click here.  Below is an example of a "musical note" that I searched.  When you download the image you will get a black band at the bottom with your citation of the name of the author, name of the photo and  a link to the original photo.
