Persuasive Cartography

Image result for cornell university library logo
This collection of maps hosted by Cornell University is called The PJ Mode collection. These persuasive maps have  been described as “suggestive cartography,” “rhetorical cartography” and “propaganda maps”    From their website, "This is a collection of “persuasive” cartography: more than 800 maps intended primarily to influence opinions or beliefs - to send a message - rather than to communicate geographic information. The collection reflects a variety of persuasive tools , including allegorical, satirical and pictorial mapping; selective inclusion; unusual use of projections, color, graphics and text; and intentional deception. Maps in the collection address a wide range of messages: religious, political, military, commercial, moral and social."    To see this searchable collection click here.

Bomb Blast

What if a nuclear bomb hit where you live.  How many people would die?  How many people would be injuried.  With this interactive tool, you can select your location (or other), what type of nuclear bomb (North Korean, Russian),  and detonation (surface or air).  To see the website click here.  Below is what would happen if  a North Korean nuke hit above our school.

There is more to this site.  If you go to the host site outrider, they cover many topics that have lead us to where we are today.  To see the main site click here.  Thanks to Larry Ferlazzo for pointing out this site.

The first is from Lance Mosier
The next is from Carol Stobb's twitter on the Treaty of Versailles

Lastly this comes from Matt Podbury's twitter (click here  to see the pdf)

Hip Hughes History Again

Keith Hughes
I previously posted about Keith Hughes, a  history teacher in Buffalo and his youtube channel.  You can see this post on "Monotheism and Polytheism"  by clicking here.  Now he does not do music videos like I posted last Wednesday but he does a rather quick job on many topics.

Today I would like to highlight one that you might be able to use in your class.  He titles it "The French and Indian Wars For Dummies".  Take a look at his other videos.  If your a teacher, it may give you some ideas and if your a student, you may find some videos to help you study.
