Biointeractive

Biointeractive is a great too for introducing and extending knowledge in  Biology , with highly engaging, short videos, interactives and  lesson plans. The website might be used to introduce new topics or to extend thinking.  Bionteractive allows learners to see science in action.

For example if you are teaching Decomposers there is an activity called "Solving Crimes with the Necrobiome".   This activity explores content presented in the animated video Solving Crimes with the Necrobiome, which describes the microbial changes associated with decomposing corpses.

In the video, Ed Yong and scientist Jessica Metcalf describe how a community of many microbes, known as the necrobiome, takes over our bodies after we die. Scientists study the necrobiome to better understand the process of decomposition. This research also provides tools for criminal investigators. For example, forensic experiments have shown that it may be possible to estimate time of death by sequencing the DNA of microbes found on and around corpses.

The “Student Handout” probes students’ understanding of the key concepts addressed in the film. The “Educator Materials” document provides suggested pause points in the film with questions for students, background information, and detailed discussion points; a list of related resources and references; and an answer key for the “Student Handout.”

Cell Labelling and Biorender

I have posted about this site in the past.  Last week I posted about Cells Alive so I thought you might want to some more cells and biology.   If you are teaching Science or obviously Biology you might want to take a look at The Biology Corner website by clicking here.  There are many great worksheets.  For example if you click here you will get a great set of slides for labelling plant and animal cells.  The images were created with Biorender which provides a huge bank of images to create scientific illustrations.  From their website, "Create Professional Science Figures in Minutes.  Browse thousands of pre-made icons and templates from more than 30 fields of life sciences."  It is free for educational use.

Worksheets by Mathops

This site has broken down each unit of many high school classes into component lessons.  The lessons might be okay for your students if they miss class, but there are other sites that do this well.  I posted about Mathispower4u on April 29 2013 (click here), which has some great organized videos by unit.  There is also Khan Academy and others.  What I really like about MathOps is the worksheets they have for each unit.  Just click the Worksheets link before section 1 of each unit.  To see the website, click here.
