Tour Builder by Google

Tour Builder powered by Google Earth

This is what  Katie Siemer has to say about Tour Builder, "So what is Tour Builder? Tour Builder uses Google Earth technology and allows you to add a sequence of locations on a map that users can click through like they’re going on a tour. You can upload up to 25 photos and YouTube videos to go along with each stop on the tour. You can also add a description and links to additional resources for each location that you add. When users view the Tour, they will click “next” on the tour to be taken to the next point on the map. Check out this example by the Jane Goodall Institute to get the gist of it. Tour Builder was originally created, “to give veterans a way to record all the places that military service has taken them, and preserve their stories and memories as a legacy for their families,” according to the Tour Builder website. Obviously, Google saw the cool ways this could be used in education and beyond and eventually made it public."

This tool could easily be used in History or Geography but you could use this in English class when discussing a novel that the character travels around.  You could easily build a tour to show your class.   Or you could have your students build a tour of the book they reading.  To see Tour Builder click here.

System of Equations and shooting hoops

Andrew Stadel posted a nice little pdf that you could use to introduce systems of equations.

This picture can be found by clicking here.

This picture can be found by clicking here.

Maybe you might have your students go to the gym and shoot some baskets in pairs and record the number they make from the free-throw line and from the field (or field vs 3 pt line) and then they can present their data to the class and have other students solve the equations.

From their website, "The free noise level display and stopwatch for the cooperative classroom.

It helps students be aware of the noise level in the classroom during cooperative learning activities, and moderate it accordingly.

When time is over, the percentage of time that the noise level has exceeded the optimal level is displayed, so the teacher can use that value in gamification techniques."

An Alternative to Canva

From a review from gerenm.photograpy, "Every so often, and especially around holidays, we all need to put together some sort of photo collage, be it for a Facebook post, an e-mail to friends and family, or for some sort of promotional material for our businesses. And, certainly, we can do it in Photoshop or InDesign or Illustrator or even Lightroom - if we have the time. More than likely, though, we need to do it quickly, and most of the "usual suspects" are not conducive to getting the job done right now."

Conversations in Literacy
I saw this on the Conversations In Literacy.  If you would like an activity that actively  involves the whole class, you might want to try this.  It will work in a Social Science class too.  Each student reads the posted passage and has to write something about it.  Then the students move around and respond to other students writing.  To see Lori's post click here.

Build an Atom

PhET Home Page

This site has many great simulations you can download or just click on and use.  "Build an Atom" is an interactive information simulation.  You can build and atom out of protons, electrons and neutrons and then see how the element, mass and charge change.  You can play a game to test your skills.  This would be great as you are teaching this topic or as a review.  To see Build an Atom click here.

Schools of California Online Resources for Education

SCORE masthead, closeup of compass
From their website, "The former Schools of California Online Resources for Education, History/Social Science (SCORE H/SS) evaluated, aligned, and annotated quality resources from the WWW to the California History-Social Science Content Standards and curriculum." and  "Funding for maintenance of the SCORE H/SS website ended by 2006, and the site was no longer being updated. However, due to the continuing high traffic to the hundreds of activities and lessons hosted on the server, archived versions of those resources will continue to be hosted for the time being."

The site has many great lesson plans and activities but you will have to root around in their index folder to find stuff, but it is well worth it.
