Free Comic Strip Makers For Students

There a million different ways to have students at all levels use a digital comic strip in your class, no matter what you are teaching.  No, I can't use it in my physed class.  Yes do you teach health?  Science, what did one cell say to another during Mitosis?  Let your kids figure out the ending.  Math, okay that might be tough but I am sure someone smarter than me could figure it out. These would be great in ESL or ELL.  Maybe as a final summative evaluation.  The sky is the limit.  Here are a couple free comic strip makers.  To read the article click here.

Youglish for ESL Pronunciation

I know that some students  learning English will use google and type "How to say" and then type the word.  It works but it does not give context.  If you are teaching ESL or ELL you might show this site to your students.  It actually shows real people on youtube using the word.  Also if you are Canadian you can use the drop down menu and select Canada or whatever accent you want.   To see the site click here,   hopefully after checking out my amazon.ca ads below.   If you are Canadian and making any amazon.ca purchase please click on my links below first as I will get a small commission on anything you buy even if it is something else.   Thanks.  This post may contain affiliate links that earns me  a commission at no extra cost to you.  Buy your Christmas gifts soon and check out the pre Black Friday ads below.

The Newest Americans

This Webby Award Nominee was pointed out by Larry Ferlazzo. I know it is not Canadian but it has stories about new immigrants to the US and I am sure will still work with ESL students in Canada.  To see the site click here.

Santa Reads Your Script

Would you like to have Santa read your script to a friend so  that you can send them the video?  You just select one of 4 backgrounds for Santa, type your message and give them your email address.  Then by AI you will get Santa to read your message.  It takes a bit of time for them to check your message for profanity etc.   This might be great to do in your class, especially an ELL class.  To see the website click here.

Canada and Immigrant Students

The PBS Newhour aired the following documentary about teaching immigrants in the Canadian school system titled "What the US could learn from Canada about integrating immigrant students"
From the PBS site "In Canadian public schools, the children of new immigrants do as well as native-born children within three years of arriving. There kids don't just get language and academic support; their home cultures are celebrated as they are integrated into classes. And strong social services and healthy education funding help too."

Rewordify

According to Teachers First, "Rewordify helps you understand what you read. Paste any text or website into the box to rewordify the text into simpler language. Easier to understand words replace difficult text shown with highlighting. Click on the highlighting to view the original, more difficult word(s). View excellent student and teacher demonstrations showing how to use the website. You have the option to choose how Rewordify displays the results using the options in the settings. Several options allow for easy personalization of results".  To see the rewordify website click here.

If you have different level readers in the same class, this might be a quick way to differentiate what they are reading.  Just copy and paste the text in the yellow box.  If you are teaching ESL/ELL students this site might come in handy.
