Hip Hughes History Again

Keith Hughes
I previously posted about Keith Hughes, a  history teacher in Buffalo and his youtube channel.  You can see this post on "Monotheism and Polytheism"  by clicking here.  Now he does not do music videos like I posted last Wednesday but he does a rather quick job on many topics.

Today I would like to highlight one that you might be able to use in your class.  He titles it "The French and Indian Wars For Dummies".  Take a look at his other videos.  If your a teacher, it may give you some ideas and if your a student, you may find some videos to help you study.

Math and Gaming

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 10.46.24 AM

If you are teaching a computer science course or teaching a math course you may want to look at this article on Edudemic by clicking here..  It talks about how much math you actually use in programming game code.

Worksheets by Mathops

This site has broken down each unit of many high school classes into component lessons.  The lessons might be okay for your students if they miss class, but there are other sites that do this well.  I posted about Mathispower4u on April 29 2013 (click here), which has some great organized videos by unit.  There is also Khan Academy and others.  What I really like about MathOps is the worksheets they have for each unit.  Just click the Worksheets link before section 1 of each unit.  To see the website, click here.

Kahoot - Game Based Learning

Have you ever played one of those trivia games in a restaurant (one with a license for adult beverages).  Time ticks down and you have only 4 or 5 choices.  You get scored on how quick you answer.  Well Kahoot is a way to teach and learn with a phone or tablet using  game based pedagogy.
kahoot2
You need to register but it is free.  To see the site click here.  Maybe everyone in your class does not have a smart phone but I am sure you could do this in groups where at least one student has a phone or mobile device.

Watch these grade 9 students using Kahoot.

Causes of Untimely Death

I saw a tweet from Bill Gates that led me to this Wired article on deaths by various causes.

You can read the Wired article by clicking here.  There are some very interesting interactive visualization tools to compare this data.  This might work well as a starting point in a health class or science class.  Note Suicide is a large block than Violence.  Look how large Road Accidents are, which I imagine include drinking and driving which really are not accidents.

What does John Locke say?

Do you teach Civics or a government class?  You or your students might want to watch Mr. Betts parody of "What does the Fox say?", which I posted on Friday January 17 2013. Click here to see that post.  Hey maybe your class can do a group FSE on a topic and pick a song and do  something like this.

If you like this video for teaching, see my post on "History and Literature for Music Lovers" by clicking here.  Below is an example of Mrs B work to Lady Gaga, "Poker Face" about Catherine the Great.
On that note, if you are in St. Petersburg, you have to visit The Hermitage.  We visited two summers ago and it was FANTASTIC.
I also love that many of Mrs B and Mr J's music selection is early 80s.  See below.

Many resources here for advanced French language learners.  There are interactive quizzes in many subjects such as Physics and World History, all in French.  A bit too tough for me with my limited background but some might be just right for your students.  To see the website click here.

Jump Start - Personal Finance

Jump$tart.org Home

If you teach personal finance in your business, guidance or mathematics course there is a short reality check where you pop in some things that your students expect to have when they move out into the real world.  It then calculates what they will need to make and the type of jobs that pay around that.  If you are a student you may just want to try this yourself.

Top Trumps Card Game

This would be a game to play with your math students who are working on solving single step and two step equations in one variable.  Below is a sample card.

The game rules are simple and you can get the cards by clicking here.  I am sure you could make up more cards yourself based on any theme you wanted.  You could even make them with say the Kennedy Senior Football team or even better/worse with Kennedy Staff and Administration on them.  I would hate to see the what Power Mrs. Pratt has or what Strength Mr. Crowley has.  You could even convert the questions to any other course as long as the 4 attributes the card has have a numeric answer.   Could make for a fun review.

The rules of the game are:
Top Trumps has been a very popular card game in the United Kingdom since the seventies. There are many different card decks with various subject matter, i.e. Cars, Planes, Films, Military Jets, famous TV shows, etc...

Top Trumps are now also available in the USA, based on the classic card game "War", it's played by choosing your best stat, trumping (beating) your opponent’s card, and winning the entire deck.

Each pack of Top Trumps consists of a number of cards (usually 30 or 32), each of which features in-game characters based on related subject matter which are full of stats, pictures and educational and interesting facts. The game is multiplayer and fits handily in the pocket so it can be played anywhere.

2-6 people can play. Deal out all the cards face down to the players. Each player holds their cards face up but may ONLY look at their top card.

The player to go first chooses the ‘best’ statistic (usually the highest) from their top card, e.g. “Top Speed 252mph”. All other players read out the SAME statistic. Whoever has the best or highest value wins and places all the top cards including their own to the bottom of their pile. They then choose the statistic for the next round.

During a round, if 2 or more cards ‘tie’ or no data is available for that particular statistic then all the cards are placed to one side and the same player chooses again from their next card. The winner of the hand also takes the cards that were placed to one side.

The first player to win all the cards is the winner of the game!

Comics in Education

For literacy education you may want to look at how to use graphic novels or comics in your classroom.
Take a look at this site by clicking here.

Notegraphy

Lifehacker.com recently stated that "Notegraphy is the Instagram of Words for the Writer in You."
In Instagram, you take a photo, apply a filter and share it with friends. Notegraphy has a similar approach, where you write a short note, choose one of the templates to beautify it, and share it either on Notegraphy or on other networks like Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook.  You could have your students highlight their favourite passage in a story or quote or  part of a poem.  Students, you could become a Hipster Quote Machine!  To visit their site click here.

Create an easy webpage for handing out and collecting assignments.  This is a free site that is basically, well basic.  It allows you to do only 4 things and that is probably a good thing if you just want to start trying to have a web presents with your students and join the 21st century.  You can host documents, so post your course information sheets for parents, post your homework and assignments for students.  Students can upload their assignments to you.  You can maintain a classroom calendar and lastly you can send announcements out to parents and students.  To see the site click here.

Show Business - The Economics of Entertainment

On February 6, 2014,  I posted "Peanuts and Crackerjacks - The Economics of Sports" by Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.  Well this is a similar educational game based on the Entertainment business.
Unit 1, "Climbing the Charts" is about the music industry and Unit 2, "Another Action Hero" is about the Film Industry as it relates to the economics of international trade and globalization.  Check it out by clicking here.
