Modelling Parabolas with Angry Birds

If you use Geometer's Sketch Pad in your math class you might want to try this activity.  Not sure if kids even know what Angry Birds is anymore but if they don't play this game you could have the kids video some classmates shooting basketballs in the gym with there cell phone to do this activity or download a video of Lebron shooting a basket.  To see the activity click here.

Zoomtastic - an online Geography game

Here is a great Geography game to play online.  From their website, "A map will appear in the screen and a 30 seconds countdown starts.  The map zoom outs slowly giving you more information over time.  After 10 seconds, 4 possible answers appear.  Choose one!"  To see the website click here.

SafeShare.tv

I was at a PD session on Friday and our VP showed a Youtube video.  At the end it put up a next video that was entirely inappropriate for what we were doing.  If this has happened before to you here is your solution.  I posted about SafeShare.tv on November 18 2016 but here it is again for you.  Remember the search box in the top left corner is your friend for previously posted material.  Safeshare will remove all Youtube ads and suggested videos which might not be appropriate for your students.  Just put the Youtube or Vimeo URL into the box and click the Generate Safeview button.  Your video will now show up on a SafeShare page that will ask you if you want to put a description of the video.  That is up to you.  Maybe you might want to put some questions there.  Hit the submit button.  You can now copy the new URL code at the bottom and use that to show the video to your class.    To see  what an old Youtube video of my son looks like on SafeShare click here.

1 year - What has changed?

Happy Birthday Dedo.  I could post about things like hearts and chocolates and wish my wife and kids a Happy Valentines Day (so Happy Valentines Day to family H)  but it is also one year since the Marjory Stoneman Doughlas high school shooting.  This is a repeat of what I posted last year but I think is very important.

VICE News

Thanks Mr D for showing this to me.  Vice News had an article along with the 7.5 minute powerful Youtube video showing dots to animate students. teachers and the shooters movements in real time.  The shooter is a black dot with the line showing the direction of the gun.  The green dots are students or teachers.  The yellow dots are people that have been shot and the bluish dot are deceased.  It is a powerful video and shows teachers and students much to think about.  Get out of site lines of the door is number one in my opinion and get out of the hallway is number two.

Building models to understand and mitigate brain injury

Microsoft has a new Hacking STEM project for middle school students that could easily be modified for high school students.  With a lot of media attention given to concussions lately, this project might be right for you.  Lesson plans, instructions and a material list is found on the page.  It is relatively inexpensive with the processor costing $22 US.  To see the web page click here.

Clever PDF

I saw on Richard Byrne's website the following, "CleverPDF is a free service that anyone can use to convert a PDF into a Word document, a Pages file, or an ePub file. That's just the tip of the iceberg of what's on offer from CleverPDF. The service can be used to create PowerPoint slides, Keynote slides, images, Numbers, and Excel files.

In addition to turning existing PDFs into other formats, CleverPDF can be used to convert other files into PDFs. For example, you can use CleverPDF to create PDFs from Word, PPTX, Excel, and images.

And if you already have a PDF, but need to modify it, CleverPDF has tools for that too. CleverPDF will let you combine PDFs, split PDFs, apply watermarks to your PDFs, and encrypt your PDFs.

I used CleverPDF to convert one of my PDFs into a Word document today. It was quick and easy. I didn't have to register on the site or enter my email address in order to convert my PDF and then download the Word document."

The Math Contest

The Math Contest has a weekly math question for middle school students and one for everyone else.  If you enter a wrong answer you have to wait an hour before you can try again.  If you get it correct your name goes on the board.  Recently they have added a daily question that seems to be geared to high school students.  Check it out by clicking here.
