Yummy Math

Yummy Math

If you have not tried out some of the activities at Yummy Math in your class you might want to.  The site is from grades 3 through high school.  The pdf on checking if a stream of water ejected into air is parabolic is a nice activity.  You can see that by clicking here.  In fact it would be great to have your class actually take a video or picture and do it the activity with their own stream.  To see the home page of Yummy Math click here.

Getty Images

Image result for getty images logo
Getty Images now has over 40  million images available for non-commercial use.  The image below shows how the image looks when embedded.  As a track and field coach, I had to search the images for track and field.  I like the fact that the image is  attributed with the the site I got the image from and the author.  Also many of the images are from very current events, so if you are teaching a course that deals with that you might want to start off your class with these images.  Today had images of the aftermath of the Mexican earthquake.  To see the website click here.  Most teachers are worried about plagiarism in their students writing but are not as fussy about the images they use.  They should be.  They should make sure the pictures are creative commons or take a look at another post I made about Photos For Class by clicking here.

NY Times - What's Going On in This Graph

The New York Times icon
Here is a bonus post for today.  Yesterday the New York Times announced that they would publish monthly, "What's Going On in This Graph".    According to their website, "Teachers tell us these data visualizations are rich texts for classrooms across the curriculum, not just in the math or statistics class. Whether in a literature class analyzing Jane Austen’s language, a science class considering climate data, or a civics class studying gerrymandering, teaching students how to read, interpret and question graphs, maps and charts is a key 21st-century skill."  To see the website click here.
