Resources on Food
Here are a few resources that can be used in a Foods and Nutrition class or Health unit in Physed.
Chew Or Die is a food challenge app that encourages users to make small changes to their daily food choices. Regularly eat pepperoni pizza for lunch? How about trying veggies on top instead? Ok,you’ve got that down… now why not dare your Facebook friends to out-veggie your pizza?"
Too read more or download the app click here.
How much sugar is in the food we eat. They have many different categories and show graphically with sugar cubes how much sugar is in that particular food or drink. To see the site click here.
The following is an Iphone app called Chew or Die created by The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. From Itunes, "Mouths crammed with hot dogs. Tears streaming down pie-smeared faces. Stomachs stretched to the bursting point. These are the less-than-savory images that "competitive eating" conjures. But MSI's new mobile app will change that. Download Chew or Die and you can start challenging your friends—and yourself—to eat healthier.

The Simpsons - The Raven
Back to Edgar Allan Poe and The Raven for tomorrow.
Lisa reads "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe. In this adaptation, Bart is depicted as the raven, Homer finds himself in the role of the poem's lead character, while Lisa and Maggie are seraphim. Marge appears briefly as a painting of Lenore. James Earl Jones narrates. The poem is read verbatim, with some of the poem edited out for time. Several times a bust of Edgar Allan Poe is visible in the background on a bookshelf.

Canadian Wartime Propaganda Posters
Most people think other countries only had propaganda posters. Well we had them in Canada during both WWI and WWII. It is interesting to see them. Maybe you could have your students make their own using digital media or draw them. The following is from the War Museum of Canada. To see more click here.

It is just Educational Hip-Hop from Flocabulary. With Halloween in a couple of day, here is another Edgar Allan Poe post. It would be great to read the original and then go over it again with this rap.

Straight Line Graphs
From their website, "Maths teacher Kathryn Hurrell, at Comberton Village College, helps her lower ability Year 9 pupils understand straight-line graphs by turning the mathematical concept into a practical activity.
Kathryn gives groups of pupils some simple y=mx+c equations and they work out pairs of suitable coordinates and stand at that point within a large scale set of axes on the classroom carpet."

Anyone at KCI interested in winning some money for themselves and for our library? Read the book "The Healers" (they will give you a digital copy or hardcopy, order a couple extra for the library please) and then make up a billboard, bookcover, booktrailer, commercial, act out a scene from the book, make up your own scene with characters from the book, write your own music based on the book or write an essay, poem or speech. Halloween Math for Kids
Smarty Games has a nice little game for younger kids to practice their math skills. I know this will not be of use for high school kids but I thought if teachers have little ones at home or students have younger sibblings this might be just the right thing for them. To try the game click here.
Edgar Allan Poe
With Halloween being just over a week away, I thought an Edgar Allan Poe posting was in order. Here are a couple of interactive sites dealing with one of his most famous poems, The Raven.

Concert TIckets and Algebra
You could do a similar question with your class by photoshopping out a screenshot from TicketMaster after going through and pretending to order concert or sporting or tickets to the theatre as shown below.
Happy Thanksgiving
Notice Mr. Miller photoshopped or painted out the number of tickets. Now your students can do set up the algebraic equations and then solve. Note that setting up the equations is a key part of how they can be marked. Then you can reveal the answer.

A couple of articles for your reading pleasure
From the article "Stop Telling Your Employees What to Do" is not directly about education but does have a lot of applicability to the classroom. You can read the article by clicking here.
From the article "No Rich Child Left Behind" is an interesting read. There are some stats that are pretty self explanatory ( Fisterisms included) but interesting. From the article, "Family income is now a better predictor of children’s success in school than race." You can read the article by clicking here.

Books for Victory
Google Lit Trips
This is a free website. You will have to fill out a quick survey though.
From their website
The short version is simple. Google Lit Trips are free downloadable files that mark the journeys of characters from famous literature on the surface of Google Earth. At each location along the journey there are placemarks with pop-up windows containing a variety of resources including relevant media, thought provoking discussion starters, and links to supplementary information about “real world” references made in that particular portion of the story.
The focus is on creating engaging and relevant literary experiences for students. I like to say Google Lit Trips “3-dimensionalize” the reading experience by placing readers “inside the story” traveling alongside the characters; looking through the windshield of that old jalopy in The Grapes of Wrath.
What Google Lit Trips AREN’T
Google Lit Trips aren’t like sparknotes and other resources that can be used to circumvent the need to actually do the reading. They are designed to stimulate higher level thinking skills and to connect the story’s themes and messages to the issues of the real world in which students live.
